NBA Finals '09: Lakers or Magic?

It's the Lakers versus the Magic--that's right, there's no Lebron, no KB24-LJ23 showdown, that may have to wait for at least next season. NBA fans need not worry anyway, the finals matchup should be an interesting one. I won't mention playoff averages or stats here, just insights on the upcoming NBA Finals showdown. Magmamarunong muna ako hehe..

Fisher - Alston

Though Fisher is a proven clutch player, an excellent shooter, and has more playoff experience, I would give the advantage to Alston. Not only because he is quicker, faster, and a good shooter but Fisher has become the weakest link of the LA defense. Like the other opponents faced by the Lakers in the playoffs, Fisher's defense will be attacked constantly. I'm expecting Alston to be more agressive on offense.

Bryant - Lee/Pietrus

Kobe will eat Lee's defense, no discussion there. Expecting the double team on Bryant is already given. I wouldn't be surprised either if Orlando throws different defenders to Bryant, including Turkoglu, Pietrus, and maybe even Lewis. We may also see Pietrus on the starting five if needed. Lee and Pietrus should continue to be productive as what they did against the Cavs. They should be ready for Howard's kickout pass.Ariza - TurkogluThese players are both versatile, can shoot the outside and can contribute on almost all facets of the game. Turkoglu's playmaking skills gives him the advantage, however. But the task isn't easy for Hedo either, he should expect a tough time dealing with Ariza's defense.
Ariza - Turkoglu

Odom - Lewis

Similar to the Ariza-Turkoglu matchup, both can deal with the opposing player, and both can fill up the stat sheet from points and assissts, to rebounds and steals. While, Odom is a better inside player, Lewis is deadlier from the perimeter. It's a question of who will be able to make most of his advantage. I call this matchup even.Gasol/Bynum - HowardChalk one up for the Magic. Unless Gasol or Bynum becomes really aggressive, D12's going to wreak havoc inside, which would attract double/triple team and then would allow Orlando's shooters to sink 3-pointers all night.

Bench - I believe the advantage here belongs to LA. Four other Lakers not mentioned above can give valuable contribution off the bench namely Walton, Brown, Farmar, and Vujacic. The Lakers would especially need Vujacic's outside shooting. For Orlando, three other players on their roster that can really help out off the bench--Gortat, Johnson, and, if Stan Van Gundy opts to use him, JJ Redick.

Key points for victories would obviously revolve around the dominance of Kobe Bryant or Dwight Howard and which supporting cast can contribute most.

My call: Lakers, six games at least.
